In regards to your Heritage Whole Grains cereal I offer this verbose yet articulate critique: om nom nom nom nom…om nom nom nom nom….
Delish! Love how crunchy it is. No more pathetic All-Bran or Special K for me. There’s a tangible difference in quality and crunch between your cereals and those of the “major” brands. I just started trying out your cereals last month and I’m completely converted.

Hi,
Thank you for the Heritage Heirloom Whole Grains cereal.
I really appreciate having a healthy, organic, lower sugar cereal choice, and it is now part of my regular mix.
I did notice the changeover of the flakes, about a month or so ago — and for me the change is fine and OK. (I confess that the flakes now are actually a tad easier for me to consume.)
I am guessing that perhaps they are cooked less or at perhaps a lower temperature, and/or are thinner stock??
Anyway, I would wish you to convey my satisfaction with the product, and my wish that you all continue to produce healthy food products that are low in sugar, and as minimally processed as possible (which to me means not over cooked, etc) so as to retain the most nutition goodness.
Thank you.
Best wishes in the New Year,

Hi Bruce. What a lovely message! Thank you for sharing it with us. I’m so glad to hear you’re enjoying our cereal still and that the processing change has been a good one for you. We really appreciate everyone’s input as I’m working with Consumer Services to communicate all feedback, good and bad, to our Brand Manager. Take care, Justine, Nature’s Path Team. UPDATE Jan 5, 2012: Bruce, good news! But first, let me share some backstory. What happened with Heritage Flakes is that we started producing them in our Sussex, WI facility instead of our Delta, BC facility. While there wasn’t a change to the formulation, there were some adjustments to the process to create a slightly thinner flake. The ingredients and net weight of the product remain the same. Due to consumer feedback like yours, the product being produced now is thicker and denser, more like the original version. However, keep in mind that both versions are being sold concurrently, while we go through this transition. Take care, Justine, Nature’s Path Team

Hi Dani and thanks for reaching out to us. I’m so glad to hear your last box of Heritage Flakes was up to par! It’s my understanding that there’s both the old version and new version of this cereal currently on retailer shelves. We are in the process of reviewing all of your comments. Rest assured, both myself and Consumer Services are actively reporting to the Brand Managers and our Research and Development Team to ensure your valuable feedback is heard. Dear Nature’s Path,
PLEASE PLEASE GO BACK TO OLD PROCESSING for my number 1 cereal. This is the one and only kind of cereal I eat and I was utterly heart broken the other day because of the disappointing lighter texture I noticed upon opening a box of the new heritage flakes. I do not like how my flakes turned soggy in the milk within minutes - something that never happened with the previous version of the flakes. Please please go back and change it to the old processing method. I really miss my all time favorite cereal, and now I’m pretty much stuck with five remaining boxes of frustration. I agree with many of the comments here regarding the change in the Heritage Whole Grains flakes - the cereal is no longer distinctive, but just another run of the mill so-so variety. Taste is still very good, but the texture isn’t special and it doesn’t hold up well in milk any longer. I have thoroughly enjoyed the few years of really outstanding product in Heritage Flakes. I came to this site to try to understand why my Heritage Flakes had changed. I hardly ever ate cold cereal until I stumbled upon Heritage Flakes about 4 years ago. FINALLY, a cereal that is not sugary sweet; a cereal that is hearty and healthy; and most importantly flakes that stayed crunchy in milk - even until my final bite! I couldn’t figure out why no one had ever made a cereal like that before. I’ve been hooked ever since (and have hooked SEVERAL of my friends and family). In fact, I actually buy my cereal by the case - for a case discount. When I travel I used to take boxes with me; it was a great cereal to eat dry as a snack! When I opened the most recent box, I was hoping (like others on this page) that the flimsy flakes were a one-time processing fluke and not an intentional change. But, it seems as though my fears are confirmed. Sadly, if this new version remains, it looks like I will be on the search for a new cereal. The new Heritage Flakes are run-of-the-mill, like every other “‘flake that gets soggy in milk” cereal. That’s the main reason I didn’t eat cold cereal to begin with.
Sadly, the new flakes will not hold up in milk, will not hold up as a crunchy stand alone snack, will not hold up in gorp (as one writer above has used it for).
Please consider changing back to the original flake. You had an AMAZING thing going.

Submitted by Justine on November 21, 2011 - 09:57.
Hi there and thanks for asking us this question. Unfortunately, at this time we aren’t testing the glycemic index or glycemic load of our foods. We don’t test this as its measured per 100g, rather than the actual product serving size, so the interpretation can be slightly inaccurate. We’d suggest that people choose foods that are a good source of fiber and protein so that these nutrients will slow the absorption of glucose in the blood. In general, foods that have contain more than just carbohydrates have a lower GI. Foods that contain protein and fat tend to be lower than white bread for example. From a manufacturing standpoint, it’s easy to alter the index by adding fat to the product— not necessarily making the product better for your health. Hope that helps! I came to this site because I wondered whether you had discontinued Heritage Flakes in the 375g box. I say this because my local Wholefoods (in Washington, DC) has stopped carrying the item (although they do now carry the larger, less convenient, 900 bag, for a higher per oz. price). And having arrived at the site, I echo the comments of those above who described a “change” in flavor about a month ago. My own guess at the time was that there was a packaging accident, and a different cereal made by your company was placed in Heritage boxes. Grateful if you could keep an eye on getting the right product in the right box, and ensuring those boxes continue to be widely available. I really don’t want to have to go back to Kaashi…

I, too find your cereal absolutely delicious. I stumbled upon it while looking for Irish oatmeal (the store was out) and took your cereal instead as a temporary substitute and now I can’t stop eating it. My naturopath prefers me to have oatmeal; she would like me to be as sugar-free as possible, but I love the nutty taste. Can you tell me just how much sugar is in a box? Is it possible to make it without sugar; I use fruit to sweeten it (or make it fruit juice sweetened like your corn flakes)?
Also, do you ship to Canada? The website for your products here doesn’t carry this product in eco pac and I would prefer to use that instead of the box and in addition, their prices are higher than our health food stores. Or is there a store in Toronto that carries your eco pacs?
Sorry for the long message, but thank you for your delicious cereal- having oatmeal all the time gets mundane and I look forward to the days I can eat your Heritage Flakes- do you think I subconsciously make myself late in the morning so I’ll have an excuse to have your cereal instead of making hot oatmeal? I’m also going to try your new Heritage Crunch. Thanks, again,

Hi Calder and thanks for reaching out to us. I’m so glad to hear you enjoy this cereal. It’s nice to chance uo your oatmeal breakfast routine and try something else that’s both nutritious and delicious like this! To answer your question, there is 4 grams of sugar per serving, which is actually quite low compared to many other cereals. Our Heritage Flakes do come in an ECO PAC and I’d suggest contacting Nicolette, Consumer Services, using our contact form here: http://www.naturespath.com/contact-us, and she’ll be happy to help you find this in the Toronto area.
