I agree with you! I also have been buying the Mesa Sunrise cereal for several years now. I eat it for snacks & breakfast nearly every day & it’s the only cereal I NEVER tire of! I’ve only purchased the 26 oz “eco-bag” at our local health food store in Springfield, IL & it has always been excellent. T’m glad there is such a great product out there. Not sure about some of the other comments I’ve read, but maybe discount stores aren’t watching the shelf date, perhaps.

In fact I’m hoping to go back this weekend and see if they have more. I live in South Carolina. Hi Betty and thanks for sharing your concerns with us! South American products when used by Nature’s Path must be certified organic to the same standards that we use in USA or in Canada. They must be inspected annually just like here. We only deal with companies that have a track record of good organic practices and following the high level of organic integrity that we expect. As an organic company, our prodcuts don’t contain any artificial preservatives, additives, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the ingredients aren’t grown with toxic pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or fumigants. In the US, our products are certified organic by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program (NOP) and in Canada our products are certified by the Canadian Organic Office (COO), a department of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). We’re proud to say we’re the first cereal company to become USDA certified organic, and we take this honor very seriously. To read more on our certification and feelings about organics, please see here: http://www.naturespath.com/eat-well/organics. I hope the info I’ve shared can help earn your trust in Nature’s Path. We have the same problem here in NYC/NJ that others have experienced with the flax cereal, though apparently less with this product than your others. Opening the boxes there is a smell of paint/plastic/chemical and eating it causes diarrhea, one person involuntarily regurgitated it immediately.
I hope you are looking into this matter - we bought these boxes over the past 3 weeks at Shop Rite. They need to take the product off the shelves, clearly there are a lot of people getting ill.
I tried to post a comment on the Flax Pumpkin Raisin Cereal product thread and I was marked as spam. Can’t even publicly complain about the product or you’re deleted?

When I’d opened the box, my wife and I both agreed there was a kind of barnyard smell coming out. Hi there and thanks for taking the time to share your comments with us. We are very sorry you had this experience. If your cereal has a fishy, plasticy odor, this is likely due to the flaxseed oil in the cereal which may have oxidized or gone rancid. There is likely no food safety issue— only a sensory issue with the smell by some people- but when in doubt, throw out! If those who have consumed this cereal experience feelings of sickness, please visit a medical practitioner ASAP. I have told Quality Assurance of this ongoing issue. Blithedale and at least 1 had the November 2011 expiration date. Nature’s Path—PLEASE INVESTIGATE AND REPORT BACK TO US CUSTOMERS ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED AND HOW YOU WILL MINIMIZE THE CHANCE THAT THIS (RANCIDITY?) PROBLEM REOCCURS. Given the number of complaints beginning to appear, something significant seems to have happened with one or more of your production runs. Submitted by Justine on October 3, 2011 - 09:30.
Hi Martin and thanks for reaching out to us. We’re really sorry you had this experience. Rancidity is usually due to the flax content of the cereal and can result if the product has been exposed to warm shipping or storage conditions. Our products are USDA Certified Organic, which means they don’t contain any artificial preservatives, additives, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the ingredients are also not grown with toxic pesticides, chemical fertilizers or fumigants. The downside of this is these products may have a shorter shelf life than non-organic. Because we take your comments very seriously, I have told Quality Assurance of this issue. I am more than a little concerned. I bought the Mesa Sunrise in a large bag to take on a road trip. I ate some before I left and it tasted odd… I’ve been eating this cereal for years and I never had it taste like this. I left the bag at home to return it to the store later. On the way home I was telling my cousin about it and he asked, “What did it taste like?” I said, “Plasticky.” When I got home I picked up the bag to smell it, and there’s an extremely strong plastic, chemical smell coming from the packaging. I actually came here to see if there’s a recall—it’s that bad. The cereal just doesn’t taste like it usually does.

Submitted by Justine on September 27, 2011 - 11:12.
Hi MK and thanks for taking the time to reach out to us. We’re sorry to hear you’ve had this experience. Plastic or oily smells are likely due to rancidity. Unfortunately, the healthy monounsatured and polyunsaturated fats/oil that are found in ingredients such as flax are prone to oxidation (rancidity). Because Nature’s Path is USDA certified organic, we do not add any preservatives or additives, so rancidity can occur from time to time. This is often due to exposure to warm shipping or storage conditions. To ensure maximum shelf life, please store anything with flax in a cool, dry place. I have also told Quality Assurance of this issue. To make this right, please contact Nicolette, Consumer Services, using this contact form: http://www.naturespath.com/contact-us and she’ll be happy to help you further. All the best, Justine

Hi there and thanks for letting us know your concerns. We’re very sorry to hear that you’ve had this experience. The odor you’re talking about is likely emitting from the flax in the cereal. While flax is a rich source of Omega 3, it also has the tendency to give off strong odors that are sometimes described as chemical or fishy smells. This smell means that the flax has become oxidized which makes it turn rancid and it happens if this cereal has been exposed to warm shipping or storage conditions. We take your feedback very seriously and so I have told Quality Assurance. Please provide your contact details to Nicolette, Consumer Services, using our contact form here: http://www.naturespath.com/contact-us and she will be happy to help you. Hi there and thanks for reaching out to us. We take your concerns very seriously and I’ll be sure to tell Quality Assurance about this. If your box also has the same strong smell, this could be because the flax has turned rancid. Flax is known to become rancid over time, especially if it was shipped or stored in warm conditions. This cereal is a pure joy to eat. Thank you, Lorna, and God bless your abilities! It’s so delicious and it’s one of 2 cereals we eat. At the moment we’re living in Sydney and fortunately I have located one store where they sell Mesa Sunrise. Unfortunately, though, I’m having trouble finding it for a decent price. In the States I buy the eco-pac which is better value for money. Here, it’s sold in the 300g box for $7 AUD (but since the Aussie dollar is doing well, it might as well be $7 USD) and it’s really breaking the bank. But I can’t stop buying it! I inquired here as to whether or not I can buy in bulk at a discounted cost but I’m not having much luck. So I wonder if anyone could tell me if I have any options for buying in bulk from here. I understand it’s Kadac foods that imports this cereal into Australia but they don’t sell to the public. I realize the shipping will be the difficulty, but is there a favored website you could recommend? I just want to save a little bit. This cereal - along with the Maple one - is well worth the time and effort I’m putting in. It’s just not inexpensive so I have to think outside the box! Thank you again for a FANTASTIC product.

Thanks so much for getting in touch with us Courtney. We’re so sorry that you had to experience this. When flax goes rancid it has a tendency to emit volatile odors associated with chemical smells like you described. The smell indicates that the flax has oxidized which can happen if it is exposed to warm/hot conditions. This is why it’s best to keep flax products in the fridge or in a cool, dry area. We also suggest you consume organic cereals within 1 to 2 months after the box has been opened. As per our quality garantee, please email a clear scan or photogragh of the expiry date flap to Nicolette at consumerservices@naturespath.com and she will be sure to compensate you. Not only can I eat well on a gf diet, I can also be responsible for my environment. Love it Love it Love it. Suggestion for recipies are great too - as a newbie diagnosed celiac I am testing out new things. One thing I found that is really good is this crushed/crumbled as a “batter” for shake and bake - everything from pork, chicken and fish. One of my favs is to coat my mahi mahi portions with it, a little bit of sea salt, pepper, an either baking it or frying it in a bit of oil if I am wanting some fish and chips like meal. I like the idea of adding it to salad for croutons. Definitely will be trying that soon! now if we can just get this offered by restuarants that provide a “free” continental breakfast I would be set!
