Earth Day Greetings from Nature’s Path!
Earth Day Greetings from Nature’s Path! We’ve been celebrating this month with many fun and educational activities from Earth Day themed photo competitions (http://www.flickr.com/photos/earthday/), to a Waste Reduction Idea Challenge, to building a new employee organic garden for our staff in Blaine.
I work with Nature’s Path as the Sustainability and Stewardship Manager. This position arose out of the recognition that there was much more we could be doing to lighten our footprint on the Earth, in addition to the important job of supporting the growth of and access to organic food and agriculture. I also have a very personal connection to the company; being the daughter of the two people who founded Nature’s Path. A little bit of history; my dad grew up in Duncan, BC where he spent several young years on Mountain Valley Farm, my grandparent’s berry farm, where they grew delicious raspberries, strawberries and blueberries. Nature’s Path was born out of the back of my parent’s vegetarian restaurant in 1985, and is in some ways the culmination of the many different businesses they embarked upon over the years. The values that stand behind Nature’s Path, however, go back to the farm and the importance of leaving the soil and the earth better than you found it. These values have been carried through and are at the heart of what we’re attempting to do at Nature’s Path.
There are varied approaches to sustainability and many different definitions of what sustainability is and means. Drawing from the Nature part of our company name, learning from nature and applying our learnings to how we operate the business will be imperative in how we’ll be able to achieve our vision and purpose. And using the analogy of a Path, we are committed to moving toward sustainability, which we believe is not an end in and of itself. In our journey, we are doing some things really well and could certainly be doing better in other areas. We most certainly do not have even close to all the answers and work hard to do better and apply what we learn through a commitment to continual improvement. The Path toward sustainability takes all sorts of actions small and large, personal and company-wide and in the end it’s all important and good work.www.naturespath.com/do-good/sustainability
On this Earth Day we wish you progress along nature’s path from your friends at Nature’s Path.
